ideas in motion

creativity follows action

What’s up guys 👋

It’s Holistic. I am a music producer from North Carolina. Currently, I am in the pursuit of becoming a full-time producer/creator.

💡 Ideas in Motion

There’s a lot to say about the topic of inspiration. First off, inspiration is a powerful tool. To all the artists and creatives out there, you know this to be true. Paired with momentum, you feel as if you know exactly what it means to be productive.

Inspiration: to spark motivation, creativity, or emotion in someone — to move them in a way that makes them want to act, create, grow, or become better.

When it strikes, it’s important to pour as much energy into your craft as possible. It can feel like a fleeting thought you meant to write down if you don’t use it while it strikes.

The real sauce?

♛ Inspiration doesn’t come before the work. It comes from the work.

For me, taking action normally means jumping into FL Studio or simply jotting down words that come to mind, sometimes with a keyboard in front and sometimes with guitar in hand. Either way, when you feel the onset of inspiration, accept it’s presence and be willing to work with it.

“Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.” - Pablo Picasso

You’ve probably had days where you wanted to do the thing — write the article, make music, build, paint the canvas — but just didn’t feel it…

So you wait.

For the motivation to kick in

For the right idea to hit

For the spark to get you going

This is one of the ways to ensure that inspiration doesn’t come around. Trying to be forceful with a task will certainly make it harder to allow any creative flow into your work.

To stay on your game, consider these three things:

  1. Don’t begin your work with a heavy goal.

➣ start with just opening the project or the first brush strokes on a canvas.

momentum is more reliable than motivation

  2. Build a work-before-you-feel-like-it habit

➣ After coffee, open your notes. Before bed, write that idea down. After working out, open your laptop. These will get you in motion before talking yourself out of starting.

  3. Set a 5-minute timer

➣ Give yourself permission to commit 5 minutes and stop if you’re still not into it. Just starting is enough. Starting small beats not starting at all.

With fire,

Holistic
