🪞 Reflect to Progress
What would the future look like if we all could remember the past? Recall each event in vivid detail without any biases? I can’t help but think just how many stories and events have been lost throughout the time humans have lived.
I’ve been fascinated with history ever since I left school. There is a curiosity that burns inside me about how things have come to be. Part of me just accepts what society and historians tell me. Another part wants to question. All these deep questions come to mind but I just want information that will help me understand how to navigate the future and current landscape.
♛ Preparation + opportunity = success
Have you ever found yourself unable to remember something critical, not able to recollect the very thing you said you’d never forget? It happens to the best of us, but if only we could prevent mistakes like this from occurring.
“The further back you can look, the further forward you are likely to see.” - Winston Churchill
Taking time to review old notes, pages in your journal, or photos from your best memories is amazing. Although I don’t make space for it often, I know it brings a sense of inspiration into my life. The feeling you get when looking at dated memories is honestly wild. You become bittersweet in this weird way. If you’re looking to shake things up, I recommend trying this out and see if you have any new inspiration or insights come up.
If you’ve ever heard of an annual review, you know it’s a time to reflect on the year before to determine our performance. The more attention to detail, the more information you have to make the next year better. We have an extensive past to look back and avoid some of the same conflicts. Yet, we still find ourselves falling short sometimes. Try your best to work out what is getting in the way of making progress and remove them as soon as you can.
Focus on your goals and take time to use a unique trait only humans have: reflection. Our tendency can be to anticipate what’s next but maybe it’s wiser to remember our past.
How has learning from your past helped you become a better person today?
